(CIVIL WAR--CONFEDERATE.) [Yeatman, Henry C., et al.] Manuscript map of the Battle of Chickamauga. One sheet, 8 x 10 inches, heavy wear on all margins, separations at fold, ink burns have affected most of the troop markings and wiped out the Union's left flank with a hole about a third of an inch around. [Chickamauga, September or October 1863]

Additional Details

This map of the Battle of Chickamauga was apparently prepared by one of General Leonidas Polk''s staff members soon after the battle, and depicts the two forces as they stood on the final day of the battle on 20 September 1863. The Union forces have retreated to high ground above Chickamauga Creek, and the Confederates are poised to attack from the lower ground to the east. Lt. Gen. Polk leads the Confederate''s right wing, while Lt. Gen. James Longstreet has just taken charge of the left wing that morning by order of Gen. Braxton Bragg. The locations of Polk''s headquarters on Friday night [18 September] and Saturday night [19 September] are also noted.
The unsigned penciled caption is in the hand of General Polk''s aide-de-camp Lt. Col. Henry C. Yeatman. It reads "This is by no means an accurate map--either as to the position of troops or otherwise--but may aid a little in forming an idea of the Battle Ground." The map was apparently sent by Yeatman to General Polk''s son Alexander Hamilton Polk shortly after 7 October 1863 (see previous lot). Worn but attractive, it is a compelling artifact of one of the most important battles of the Civil War. with--a letter of authenticity from Polk''s great-great-great-grandson testifying to its provenance.
